Malayalam Actors Shine Tom Chacko and Sreenath Bhasi Questioned in Drug Investigation
Malayalam film industry figures Shine Tom Chacko and Sreenath Bhasi were interrogated by excise officials in Alappuzha on Monday as part of an extensive investigation linked to a recent seizure of hybrid ganja, estimated at around Rs 2 crore.
The cannabis was reportedly discovered in the possession of a woman, who claimed to have consumed the substance in the company of both actors.
In response to her statement, the excise department formally summoned Chacko and Bhasi for questioning. This inquiry is part of a larger initiative aimed at addressing drug-related issues within the film industry, with officials exploring the actors’ possible connections to the case.
Chacko, previously under scrutiny for alleged drug use and inappropriate actions, is facing heightened attention. On April 22, the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) issued a final warning to him regarding his behaviour on set, emphasizing the need for him to refrain from any future drug use.
FEFKA’s general secretary, B Unnikrishnan, confirmed during a press conference that Chacko had acknowledged his struggles with substance use.
“We have informed Shine’s family that he may require professional help to address this issue. Should he fail to uphold his commitment to avoid further disturbances, we will not offer our support,” said Unnikrishnan.
Chacko’s situation worsened recently when he allegedly fled a narcotics raid at a hotel in Kochi. He was later caught by Kochi police on April 19 after extensive questioning.
Although he was arrested, Chacko secured bail shortly after. The ongoing investigation continues to cast a shadow over his role in the drug-related case.
Commissioner of Police Putta Vimaladitya confirmed to ANI that the investigation remains active.
“The investigation regarding the case against actor Shine Tom Chacko is still ongoing. We have collected samples for analysis and will proceed based on the findings. There are several other elements we are looking into as well. He is cooperating with the inquiry, but at this stage, we cannot draw any definitive conclusions until we have more information. His explanation is being verified,” the police official stated.
