The joint effort between game publisher Shiro Games and developer FakeFish announces the upcoming title Frostrail, a survival crafting game that promises to immerse players in a captivating experience.
Unveiled today during the Triple-i Initiative Showcase 2025, this first-person shooter and open-world adventure is set to be available on Steam Early Access for Windows PC in 2026.
The partnership between the two developers commenced in 2023, aiming to harness their collective expertise to forge an innovative gaming experience. Through its label Shiro Unlimited, Shiro Games continues its commitment to fostering creativity among emerging talent in the industry, making Frostrail a true collaboration of development prowess.
Shiro Games has a history of successful titles, including Northgard, Wartales, and Dune: Spice Wars. Meanwhile, FakeFish gained recognition with their survival game that has sold over three million copies, showcasing their ability to connect with players.
“Building on the success of Barotrauma, we are excited to blend the high-stakes elements of survival and FPS genres with the rich exploration typically found in crafting games,” shared Aku Jauhianen, CEO of FakeFish. “The experience and varied insights from Shiro Games have proven invaluable in our development journey.”
Echoing this sentiment, Nicolas Cannasse, CEO of Shiro Games, remarked, “Our team has a well-established reputation for creating high-quality, enjoyable games. Collaborating with the talented individuals at FakeFish has been a rewarding experience, and together we aim to make Frostrail an exhilarating adventure for players.”
In Frostrail, players will find themselves in a bleak post-apocalyptic landscape marked by frigid conditions and lurking threats. Central to the gameplay is a life-sustaining locomotive, requiring players to scavenge for essential resources to enhance their convoy. Teaming up with other players in a four-person online co-op mode offers a strategic advantage as they face various natural and supernatural foes, including formidable creatures known as Revenants.
Scheduled for launch in 2026, Frostrail will support multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), and Simplified Chinese, reflecting its global appeal.
Shiro Unlimited, the publishing division of Shiro Games, was founded by industry veterans Sebastien Vidal and Nicolas Cannasse to breathe life into innovative game concepts. Originating from Bordeaux, France, the studio has previously delighted audiences with titles like Evoland and Evoland 2.
FakeFish, established in 2014 in Turku, Finland, started with a small team of university friends and has since expanded to 30 members. Their inaugural project, Barotrauma, has been well-received, selling millions of copies and nurturing a philosophy centered on providing memorable experiences and fostering a transparent community for both developers and players.
