Chhaava, a film that has already surpassed Rs 200 crore in earnings, has been granted tax-free status in Madhya Pradesh and Goa. Released on February 14, the movie has garnered significant attention for its portrayal of historical themes.
Call for Tax-Free Status in Maharashtra
Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has reached out to Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, urging them to declare Chhaava tax-free in Maharashtra. In her correspondence, Chaturvedi commended the film, which stars Vicky Kaushal, and suggested that special screenings should be held across the state.
The MP emphasized that making the film tax-free would improve access for audiences, enabling them to connect more deeply with their cultural heritage. “Considering its importance,” she noted, “I encourage you to suggest that Chief Ministers from other states follow suit, as Chhaava encapsulates not only the history of Maharashtra but also a significant chapter in the broader narrative of India,” Chaturvedi stated.
Furthermore, her letter proposed organizing special screenings for Members of Legislative Assemblies in various states, along with those at the national level for Members of Parliament, to underscore the historical significance depicted in the film.
Prior to this, the Mumbai Dabbawala Association had also called upon CM Fadnavis to enact a tax exemption for Chhaava, highlighting its cultural resonance. Subhash Talekar, president of the association, remarked, “Our ancestors served alongside Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in battle, making both him and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj highly esteemed figures in our tradition.”
In response to the growing calls for tax exemption, Fadnavis acknowledged the film’s historical integrity and expressed his commitment to finding ways to promote it widely. “We will explore the best options to make this film accessible to more audiences,” he remarked.
Directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava presents a period drama based on the life of the renowned Maratha leader, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Vicky Kaushal takes on the titular role as the eldest son of the founder of the Maratha Empire, while Rashmika Mandanna portrays his wife, Yesubai Bhonsale. The film also features prominent actors like Akshaye Khanna, Ashutosh Rana, and Divya Dutta in significant roles.
With its impressive box office performance and cultural relevance, Chhaava continues to stir discussions regarding its recognition and accessibility across India.
