Shivaji Satam Remembers Emotional Moments with Sanjay Dutt Amidst Legal Turmoil
Actor Shivaji Satam Reflects on His Friendship with Sanjay Dutt During a Difficult Period
Shivaji Satam, recognized for his iconic role as ACP Pradyuman in the popular show CID, has shared poignant memories of his interactions with actor Sanjay Dutt during a tumultuous phase in Dutt’s life. This period was marked by serious legal challenges related to the 1993 Mumbai blasts, which deeply affected Dutt. Although he was acquitted of those particular charges, he faced a six-year prison sentence in 2007 under the Arms Act due to illegal weapon possession.
In a recent interview with Friday Talkies, Satam recounted how Dutt often juggled his court appearances with late-night film shoots. “Sanju had to attend court every time during that film. I played a father, and the narrative involved a daughter whose final wish was to meet Sanjay Dutt. He would arrive on set at 2 AM, after enduring the stress of court hearings during the day,” Satam reminisced about their collaboration. He emphasized Dutt’s humility, stating, “Even then, he exuded no sense of celebrity entitlement.”
During the making of the film Vaastav, which marked a significant milestone for both actors, Dutt opened up about his feelings of powerlessness regarding the accusations he faced. Dutt consistently asserted that the weapons found were planted, and Satam remembered their conversations during this trying time. “He is actually very vulnerable. I recall him saying, ‘Shiva ab kya kare yaar, ye bag aaya, main phass gaya.’ I reassured him, ‘Baba kuch nahi hoga, tu aise hi rehna.’ We worked together on several films, and he always exhibited a wonderful, big-hearted nature,” Satam reflected.
A particularly memorable moment for Satam was when Dutt invited him and friends for a meal at his home. Dutt, equipped with one of the latest mobile phones of that era, received a compliment from Satam about the device. In a gesture of generosity, Dutt offered the phone to Satam after the meal, saying, “Please keep it, I have one more, you use this one now.” This anecdote highlights Dutt’s warm spirit during challenging times.
Dutt, who made his film debut in 1981 with Rocky, has solidified his legacy through diverse roles in numerous notable films like Naam, Saajan, and Khalnayak. His performance in Vaastav not only resonated with audiences but also garnered him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor, showcasing his exceptional talent.
