Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar Remembers Irrfan Khan on His Death Anniversary

Shoojit Sircar recently honored the memory of the late actor Irrfan Khan on the anniversary of his passing, taking to Instagram to share heartfelt reflections and behind-the-scenes photos from their collaboration in the 2015 film, Piku.

In his post, Sircar shared candid moments captured on the set, featuring himself alongside Irrfan and Deepika Padukone, the film’s leading lady. These images served as a nostalgic reminder of their time together and the camaraderie they shared throughout the filmmaking process.

In a moving caption, Sircar addressed Irrfan as a cherished friend and expressed the profound sense of loss felt since his passing. He conveyed his belief that Irrfan continues to thrive in another realm, reassuring him, “Friend, wherever you are, I know you’re doing well and have probably made many new friends there. I’m sure people have fallen in love with your charm, just as we all have. Here, I’m doing fine. But there’s one thing you might not be aware of, Irrfan—just how much you’re loved and missed here.”

Sircar reflected on their unique bond, reminiscing about shared experiences. He fondly recalled their “jhal muri” snacks and the laughter that filled their conversations, saying, “I miss our jhal muri sessions and the laughter we shared. Your discussions on the magic of life were always fascinating.”

He continued, recalling deep discussions about spiritualism and science during Irrfan’s time in London. “I’ve got the books you recommended, and I often think about our discussions on life and death. Your smile and those mystical eyes of yours are etched in my memory,” he wrote, expressing the void left by Irrfan’s absence.

In his heartfelt note, Sircar also acknowledged Irrfan’s son, Babil, who has been stepping into the acting world himself. He mentioned their connection, saying, “Irfaan, I wanted to let you know that Babil and Ayan are doing well. Babil and I play football together, and I’ve become a bit of a guardian to him.”

Sircar reassured Irrfan by sharing updates about Babil’s progress in the industry, stating, “I’m sure he’s on the right path, just like you always envisioned. Sutapa and I talk often. Me and Ronnie, we’ve just finished a film project with Babil. He’s growing into a fine artist, slowly carving his own space.”

Concluding his message, Shoojit Sircar wrote, “I know you’re watching over us from wherever you are, and that’s a comfort. There’s so much to talk about, but for now, I’ll just say adieu, friend. Lots of love.”

Irrfan Khan was celebrated for his remarkable performances in films such as Maqbool, Haider, Life of Pi, and The Lunch Box. He passed away on April 29, 2020, at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital after a courageous battle with a neuroendocrine tumor.
