Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar Remembers His Bond with Irrfan Khan
In a heartfelt conversation, renowned filmmaker Shoojit Sircar opened up about his deep friendship with the late actor Irrfan Khan, expressing how much he misses him with each new film he creates. This poignant reflection took place during an episode of the podcast “Unfiltered By Samdish,” where Sircar shared insights into their relationship, especially during Khan’s battles with illness.
Sircar recounted the closeness that developed as they learned more about Khan’s health condition. “When Irrfan had it, because I had seen my father… Irrfan and I became much closer, when we got to know about his condition because during the treatment, we started speaking quite often. He would just call me for hours,” he reminisced, highlighting the depth of their conversations.
He described how their discussions ranged from spirituality to cinema, grasping at the various facets of life. “Sometimes I don’t know what to talk to him, because you know, he’ll talk about spiritual world, magic world, all kinds, cinema, zindagi ko leke,” he added. Sircar revealed that Khan often contemplated his treatment options, weighing the possibilities of chemotherapy against alternative therapies.
Reflecting on Khan’s passing in 2020 due to complications from a neuroendocrine tumor, Sircar expressed a tinge of regret. He speculated that had Khan chosen alternative therapy, he might have extended his life. “If Irrfan had gone for the alternate therapy… maybe he would have been alive a little more,” Sircar conveyed, noting the frustration of seeing someone so talented and influential cut short.
Sircar further discussed their shared moments, including meditative practices they engaged in together. Recalling the tranquility found in those sessions, he mentioned, “Some days I would go home and sit with him, do some breathing exercise.” It was a glimpse into the unique bond they shared—one that was rare in the competitive landscape of the film industry.
“Uske andar ek alag hi ek, adhar hi ek humanism tha,” Sircar reflected on Khan’s exceptional character. He fondly remembered receiving calls from Khan around four o’clock, conjuring images of their camaraderie over tea and snacks, discussing life with an ease that spoke to their profound friendship.
The filmmaker expressed a wishful longing for his friend to return, stating, “Usko leke aao yaar, Irrfan should come back. Uske bina mushkil hai, survive karna.” Sircar candidly revealed that he feels Khan’s absence deeply in his creative endeavors. “I miss him in every film now, every film that I do,” he concluded, underscoring the void left by such a remarkable talent in both his personal life and the film industry.
