A tragic shooting event occurred at Elizabeth City State University, a historically Black university located in North Carolina, resulting in one fatality and six injuries.
The incident unfolded during the early hours of Sunday morning at the heart of the campus after festivities for “Viking Fest,” a week dedicated to school spirit, as reported by the university’s official statement.
Authorities confirmed that a 24-year-old man, who was not affiliated with the university, lost his life in the shooting. His name has not been disclosed pending notification of his family.
Of the six injured, four sustained gunshot wounds; among these, three were students at Elizabeth City State University. Fortunately, the injuries are reported to be non-life-threatening, and all victims received medical attention at a local hospital.
In response to the shooting, the university enacted a campus lockdown and advised students to shelter in place. This order was lifted later that Sunday.
In a statement expressing condolences, the university remarked that they are “deeply saddened by this senseless act,” extending their thoughts and prayers to the victims, their families, and the broader Viking community impacted by this incident.
The university has assured the community that there is no ongoing threat. However, details about any suspects involved in the shooting remain unclear. Media sources have sought further information from the Elizabeth City Police Department.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is actively collaborating with local authorities to look into the shooting. They have urged the public to provide any relevant information, including videos or photographs.
This incident follows closely on the heels of a recent deadly shooting at Florida State University, which resulted in two fatalities and additional injuries. In that case, a student and the son of a sheriff’s deputy were implicated in the violence.
Elizabeth City State University is part of the University of North Carolina system and serves approximately 2,000 students. The university is situated along the North Carolina coast, about 60 miles southwest of Virginia Beach.
