Shopify Inc. is making a significant commitment to artificial intelligence, with new policies designed to ensure that AI becomes a core expectation for all employees. This strategic shift aims to integrate AI into various aspects of the company’s operations, from product development processes to performance reviews.

In a recently circulated memo, CEO Tobi Lütke encouraged employees to embrace AI as a vital tool, advising those who had not yet incorporated it into their workflows to start doing so. He emphasized the importance of mastering AI skills, stating, “Frankly, I don’t think it’s feasible to opt out of learning the skill of applying AI in your craft; you are welcome to try, but I want to be honest I cannot see this working out today, and definitely not tomorrow.” Lütke underscored the risks of stagnation in a rapidly evolving digital landscape, asserting, “If you’re not climbing, you’re sliding.”

The comprehensive nature of Lütke’s memo reflects Shopify’s status as a leader in the Canadian tech sector. It sets a precedent for how deeply AI can be embedded within corporate culture in Canada.

Lütke’s vision includes incorporating AI across all project stages within Shopify. He advocates for using AI right from the initial prototype phase, arguing that it significantly speeds up the developmental process. “AI dramatically accelerates this process. You can learn to produce something that other teammates can look at, use, and reason about in a fraction of the time it used to take,” he noted.

Further integrating AI into the company, Lütke plans to include it in staff performance evaluations and peer review processes. He expressed concern that many individuals give up on AI tools after unsuccessful initial attempts, highlighting the need for perseverance in leveraging AI effectively. Additionally, teams seeking extra resources or hiring opportunities will be required to justify their needs by demonstrating how they can utilize AI to achieve their objectives.

Continuing the dialogue on AI usage, Shopify spokesperson Jackie Warren was approached for insights on how the company plans to ensure that AI-generated outputs are accurate and free from biases, but did not provide a response.

The initiatives Lütke outlined apply universally across the company, affecting everyone from top executives to entry-level employees. His aspiration is to fundamentally transform Shopify and its workforce, aiming for a comprehensive integration of AI into daily operations.

Shopify’s adoption of AI has been gradually increasing, with tools now available for merchant clients to help them with tasks like answering customer inquiries and crafting product descriptions or email subject lines. Shopify President Harley Finkelstein revealed that he himself utilizes AI to generate content for his Firebelly Tea company and to summarize lengthy news articles, helping him efficiently determine which ones to read later.

During the last annual summit, Lütke shared his own experiences using AI, illustrating its value to the organization. He urged more team members to explore AI actively, stating, “What we have learned so far is that using AI well is a skill that needs to be carefully learned by … using it a lot. It’s just too unlike everything else. The call to tinker with it was the right one, but it was too much of a suggestion. This is what I want to change here today.”
