Sigma Unveils the BF: A Unique Camera Experience
Sigma has introduced the BF, a groundbreaking 24.6-megapixel full-frame mirrorless camera that distinguishes itself by incorporating a built-in SSD instead of traditional CFexpress or SD card slots. Renowned for its innovative lens designs and unconventional camera models, Sigma’s latest offering is a testament to its commitment to pushing the boundaries of camera technology.
Distinctive Design and Ergonomics
The camera’s design is machined from a single block of aluminum, resulting in a striking appearance characterized by flat, angular lines. This design choice emphasizes a minimalist aesthetic, which is further reflected in the lack of any extraneous text on the camera body, including the haptic buttons. While the design may seem unapproachable due to its starkness, the BF does provide a thumb rest on the back that enhances usability. The rear of the camera includes a high-resolution screen, along with a status monitor that presents critical settings in a clear format, a menu navigation dial, a power button, and a playback button. The simplicity continues on top, where there are only two microphones and a shutter button.
Impressive Features and Capabilities
The BF’s compatibility with L-mount lenses expands its versatility, making it suitable for both photography and videography. The camera’s 35mm full-frame sensor allows for 6K video recording, with advanced features like HEVC encoding and support for frame rates of up to 120 frames per second. In practical terms, the integrated 230GB SSD provides ample storage capacity, capable of housing more than 14,000 JPEG files, approximately 4,300 uncompressed RAW images, or around 150 minutes of high-quality video.
The camera caters to contemporary photographers by offering various color modes, which modify the image aesthetics. Users can choose from standard options as well as distinct settings, including powder blue, forest green, and sunset red.
Pricing and Availability
While the Sigma BF captivates with its innovative design and functionality, potential buyers should be prepared for its price point. According to PetaPixel, the body-only price is set at $1,999, with availability slated for April 2025 in black and silver finishes.
The Sigma BF represents not just a new product but a unique approach in the crowded market of mirrorless cameras, appealing to enthusiasts who appreciate both function and form in their photographic equipment.
