A significant storm system is sweeping through the southern and eastern United States this weekend, posing a variety of weather-related challenges.

On Saturday, there is an increased potential for severe storms from Memphis, Tennessee, to Mobile, Alabama. The most intense weather activity is anticipated to occur during the late afternoon and into the evening hours.

The storm’s primary hazards include strong winds and flash flooding, with a possibility of tornadoes as well. Residents in affected areas are advised to monitor severe weather alerts overnight, as the risk of tornadoes remains elevated.

Flash flooding should also be taken seriously; as of Saturday afternoon, multiple Flash Flood Warnings have been issued for regions across Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, and North Carolina, indicating the potential for rapid water accumulation.

Northeast Facing Snow and Ice

Meanwhile, snow has moved into parts of the Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic, with conditions expected to worsen as afternoon turns to evening. This weather system is not a straightforward snowstorm; it will also bring transitions to sleet and rain as it progresses through the region into Sunday.

By 6 p.m. on Saturday, substantial snowfall is likely to blanket the I-95 corridor from the New York City area to Boston. However, locations where snow has been falling will begin to see a mix with sleet and rain, creating slippery conditions for travelers.

As the evening progresses, warmer air will push northward, leading to a changeover from snow to sleet to rain in New York City by around 10 p.m.

By 3 a.m. on Sunday, the radar across the Northeast will display a mixture of snow, ice, and rain resembling a layered dessert. In central and northern New England and parts of northern New York State, snow accumulations could surpass a foot, while cities like Hartford and Boston can expect approximately 3 to 6 inches of slushy snow, likely compacted further by incoming rain.

Wind Alerts Impacting Millions

In addition, high wind alerts are currently issued for more than 86 million individuals across 22 states, expected to remain in effect through Sunday and into Monday.

As the winter storm recedes, some areas may experience wind gusts reaching between 50 to 60 mph, extending from the southern states into the Northeast.
