Simone Biles Captures Gold at 2024 Paris Olympics All-Around Final
The prestigious title of all-around champion in women’s artistic gymnastics was contested on August 1, 2024, during the Olympic Games in Paris. The event featured top competitors from Team USA, including the formidable Simone Biles, the 2016 Rio Olympic champion, and Sunisa Lee, the defending titleholder. Many observers anticipated that Biles would add another gold to her impressive collection, and she did just that, cementing her status as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time.
The competition began with a spectacular display from Biles as she successfully executed her signature vault, known as the Biles II (the Yurchenko double pike). This impressive start allowed her to take an early lead, establishing a margin of 0.666 points over Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade after the first rotation. However, Biles faced a setback during the bars routine in her second rotation, which caused her to fall behind both Andrade and Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour. It was not until her solid performance on the balance beam in the third rotation that she regained her top position, ultimately showcasing her prowess in the final rotation on the floor exercise.
Biles concluded the event triumphantly, achieving a total score of 59.131 points. Rebeca Andrade secured the silver medal with a score of 57.932, while Lee had to put forth her best floor routine of the competition to surpass Italy’s Alice D’Amato for the bronze.
A Remarkable Comeback
The victories of Biles and Lee are emblematic of their resilience and determination. Following her success at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Biles entered the postponed 2020 Tokyo Games as a strong favorite. However, personal challenges and mental health issues led her to experience a condition known as “the twisties,” which forced her to withdraw from several events. After taking time away from the sport for mental health recovery, she made a triumphant return to competition in Paris, becoming only the third woman in history to win a second Olympic all-around title.
Watching Biles reclaim her gold medal on floor, one could hardly believe the obstacles she had faced.
In contrast, Sunisa Lee continued her gymnastics career at Auburn University after the Tokyo Games. However, her journey took an unexpected turn when she began experiencing significant health issues in February 2023, which culminated in a diagnosis of two kidney diseases. Facing uncertainty about her ability to compete again, making the U.S. Olympic team in June was already a significant accomplishment for Lee.
“I’ve had to overcome so much the past two years to where I didn’t even think that I would be here,” Lee shared, reflecting on her journey leading up to the Olympic trials.
Historic Achievements
Both Simone Biles and Sunisa Lee are now among the most decorated gymnasts in U.S. Olympic history. With her eighth Olympic medal, Biles sits at the pinnacle of U.S. gymnastics, while Lee’s five medals place her behind only Shannon Miller and Aly Raisman. Both athletes, along with Andrade, have additional opportunities to compete for medals in the upcoming individual apparatus finals scheduled for August 3, 4, and 5.
