Simu Liu Returns as Shang-Chi in Upcoming Avengers Film
Simu Liu is set to reprise his role as Shang-Chi in the highly anticipated film Avengers: Doomsday, following the character’s successful debut in 2021. Fans have speculated for years about Shang-Chi’s return to the screen, leading to concerns that Marvel may have overlooked the character. However, Liu recently shared insights indicating that his reappearance has been planned for some time. Interestingly, he also expressed his surprise at the film’s impressive lineup of returning characters.
During his recent appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Liu discussed the excitement surrounding the casting announcement for Avengers: Doomsday. When asked about his involvement, he stated, “We are so excited to get back to work.” Liu, known for his reserved nature when discussing plot details, emphasized that he could not divulge much about the movie’s content. He mentioned, “It is obviously going to be such an amazing big movie that is going to be so secretive and that I can’t talk about at all. But what I will say is that I knew that I was going to be involved in it in some capacity, but I didn’t know who else they were announcing.”
In an interesting turn, Liu revealed that many actors in the Marvel universe are often kept in the dark regarding the franchise’s future. This secrecy stems from prior incidents involving actors Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo, who have inadvertently leaked significant plot points in the past. Liu humorously noted, “I mean, they would not tell us anything because Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo kind of ruined it for all of us. Now they don’t tell anyone.” He also shared his genuine surprise at the inclusion of iconic actors like Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart in the film, stating, “These are like two of the greatest actors to ever walk the face of the Earth, and that kind of blew my mind a little bit.”
Will ‘Shang-Chi 2’ Follow ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?
Fans have been concerned that Marvel Studios had overlooked Shang-Chi after his solo film, but now that his return is confirmed, many are eager to know about the possibility of a sequel. The anticipation surrounding Avengers: Doomsday might just reignite interest in a follow-up film for Shang-Chi.
The future of the character hangs in the balance, especially considering the speculation that many characters may not survive the confrontation with Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. Fans are hopeful that, provided he emerges from Avengers: Doomsday unscathed, there remains a wealth of stories to explore within Shang-Chi’s character and the rich mythology tied to him. Set to hit theaters on May 2, 2026, Avengers: Doomsday has officially commenced production, promising an exciting continuation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
