Sinners Movie Review: A Unique Blend of Horror and Western
The film Sinners fuses the horror genre with Western elements amid a backdrop of captivating blues music, culminating in a stunning finale.
Directed and penned by Ryan Coogler, the movie draws inspiration from his personal family history. It stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twins Smoke and Stack, who return to their Mississippi hometown in 1932 intending to establish a juke joint.
They acquire a barn from a Klansman, bringing their talented young cousin Sammy (Miles Caton) on board as the guitarist. The grand opening proves to be a sensational success.
However, the festivities take a dark turn when a mysterious stranger named Remmick (Jack O’Connell) arrives, plunging the twins’ dream into a horrific reality. SPOILERS follow.
Character Fates in Sinners
The terror emerges as Remmick unveils his vampire identity, intent on transforming everyone present into his undead followers over the course of the night.
This horrifying twist allows the film to explore significant themes related to race, with Remmick suggesting that Smoke and Stack would enjoy greater freedom in death. The narrative also addresses cultural appropriation, illustrating how Remmick seeks to absorb the musical gifts of the Black community.
As expected, the film culminates in a chaotic showdown, where Smoke, Stack, and their allies resort to traditional vampire deterrents like garlic and wooden stakes.
Tragedy strikes during the conflict, leading to the transformation of Stack’s former partner, Mary (Hailee Steinfeld), and pushing Smoke to kill his ex, Annie (Wunmi Mosaku), to save her from a similar fate. In a heart-wrenching moment, Smoke appears to take down Stack after he succumbs to vampirism, while Sammy rises to the occasion, defeating Remmick with the very guitar that first captured the attention of the undead.
As dawn breaks, the remaining vampires are vanquished, allowing both Smoke and Sammy to live. However, Smoke confronts the Klansmen, resulting in his own demise in the ensuing massacre.
In a twist of fate, Smoke envisions a reunion with Annie and their lost child in the afterlife. Meanwhile, Sammy defies his father’s wishes, choosing to continue playing the blues.
Mid-Credits and Post-Credits Highlights
The film features an engaging mid-credits scene set in 1992, spotlighting a now-adult Sammy, played by blues icon Buddy Guy, as he performs in a bar.
At the conclusion of the evening, he is visited by Stack and Mary, who appear youthful and stylishly dressed for the era.
Stack shares that Smoke spared his life under the condition that he would leave Sammy unbothered, a promise he adhered to until now, as Sammy finds himself nearing the end of his journey.
The pair offers Sammy the chance for immortality, yet he declines, opting instead for a natural end.
Before departing, the trio fondly recalls that the night of the juke joint, despite the chaos and tragedy that followed, was the best night of their lives. Stack and Mary then disappear into the night, leaving an open door for a potential sequel.
A post-credits scene revisits young Sammy, showcasing him playing ‘This Little Light of Mine’ on guitar before the events of the film unfold, which is also revisited at various points throughout the storyline.
