Box Office Update: Warner Bros. “Sinners” Dominates with Impressive Hold
Warner Bros.’ latest release, “Sinners,” is making waves at the box office, achieving an impressive $48 million during its opening weekend. Following this strong debut, the film has demonstrated remarkable staying power, with only an 8% drop in its second weekend, projecting a total of $44 million according to industry estimates.
Sources from various exhibitors close to TheWrap report that, even after a week in theaters, certain premium format screenings in cities like Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, and San Francisco are sold out. This performance marks Warner Bros.’ best second weekend hold since their 2018 romantic comedy success, “Crazy Rich Asians,” which saw a decline of just 6.4% in its second weekend, coming off an opening of $26.5 million and yielding $24.8 million in its second outing.
Currently, “Sinners” is on track to become the first original film to reach $200 million at the domestic box office since Disney/Pixar’s “Coco” eight years ago, with a total estimated at $121 million by Sunday.
Competition in the Top Rankings
In the midst of this box office success, “Sinners” maintains its lead against competitors, including Amazon MGM’s “The Accountant 2.” The sequel to the 2016 film featuring Ben Affleck opened with $9.4 million on its first day across 3,610 theaters, projecting to meet expectations with a $25 million opening weekend. The film has received a positive critical reception, reflected in its 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- on CinemaScore, though it carries a significantly higher budget at $80 million compared to its predecessor.
Claiming the third spot is Disney’s re-release of “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith,” which grossed $11 million on Friday. Current estimates suggest it will achieve a weekend total of $23.5 million. This performance surpasses the $20 million from the fourth weekend of Warner Bros./Legendary’s “A Minecraft Movie,” which is now approaching a total of $375 million domestically.
For “Sith,” this result is particularly noteworthy, as it more than doubles the $8.7 million earned during last year’s 25th-anniversary re-release of “Episode I — The Phantom Menace.” It is anticipated that this weekend’s performance will push the lifetime gross of the final chapter in the “Star Wars” prequel trilogy to approximately $400 million in domestic earnings.
More updates will follow as the situation develops…
