Sir Gino Triumphs in Ladbrokes Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase
In a thrilling showdown at Kempton Park, Sir Gino showcased exceptional talent and determination, overcoming Ballyburn in the highly anticipated Ladbrokes Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase. This Grade Two event served as a spotlight for two prominent horses from the esteemed stables of Nicky Henderson and Willie Mullins, echoing the excitement generated by their recent contest in the Christmas Hurdle, where Constitution Hill outpaced Lossiemouth.
Sir Gino, who had been impressive in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle, entered the race as the strong favorite at 8/13, under the guidance of jockey Nico de Boinville. Ballyburn, a formidable contender with three Grade One novice hurdles to his name, had a solid debut over fences and was positioned as a 7/4 chance with Paul Townend in the saddle.
The race primarily featured a duel between the two athletes, with Ballyburn initially establishing a lead. However, as they approached the back straight, De Boinville unleashed Sir Gino, who quickly gained momentum, leaving Ballyburn to struggle in his wake. Sir Gino consistently outperformed Ballyburn in the jumping segment and accelerated away after rounding the home turn, ultimately maintaining a commanding seven-and-a-half-length victory after navigating the final fence successfully.
Reflecting on the race, De Boinville remarked, “He was a bit sketchy over the first, but by the time we approached the open ditch, everything clicked into place. He’s incredibly quick and starts taking lengths in the air early on. We were confident in his capabilities; it was just a matter of execution. He has a powerful engine, and this venue requires quick thinking and speed over the obstacles.”
Henderson had initially considered a run in the Champion Hurdle for Sir Gino following his victory in the Fighting Fifth, but he demonstrated a clear preference for a chasing career. “A few months back, Charlie Morlock, Nico, and I took him out to jump some fences in the early morning light, and we were amazed by his performance,” Henderson stated. “Despite his potential to follow the Champion Hurdle route, it became clear that chasing was a natural fit for him, particularly given his two-mile style and the four-year-old allowance.”
Henderson observed the horse’s transition, noting, “After his first hurdle race, it was evident he still had much to learn about jumping English fences, having come from France. With proper schooling, though, he improved significantly.”
Following the race, bookmakers Betfair and Paddy Power reacted by adjusting Sir Gino’s odds for the Arkle at Cheltenham, moving them to evens from 11-4, underscoring expectations for his future performances. Henderson emphasized the importance of further races to fine-tune Sir Gino’s skills, even if the upcoming contests might not present substantial challenges. “Despite his apparent ease in today’s race, we prefer to have him gain experience before tackling the tougher tests he will face at venues such as Sandown, Ascot, and Cheltenham,” he explained. “This ground offers a great learning environment without the pressure that will come later.”
Furthermore, Henderson reflected on the successful history of his two-mile chasers, recalling the extraordinary talents of past champions such as Altior and Sprinter Sacre, and expressing hope for Sir Gino to follow in their footsteps.
