England’s Strategic Shift Ahead of France Clash
In a bid to rejuvenate their fortunes in the Guinness Six Nations, England is contemplating a significant change to their lineup for the upcoming match against France. The coaching staff is considering the deployment of Marcus Smith at full-back, while Fin Smith may take over the fly-half position, marking a pivotal move in England’s campaign on Saturday.
Marcus Smith has established himself as the primary fly-half following the 2023 Rugby World Cup. However, the potential shift to full-back aims to facilitate Fin Smith’s entry into the starting lineup. Fin has previously appeared in seven Test matches, all as a substitute, making this potential debut critical, particularly after England’s narrow loss to Ireland, where they fell 27-22 in the opening round.
As the starting fly-half, Fin would need to effectively direct the backline, while Marcus would leverage his skills as a counter-attacker from the full-back position, a role he played during the World Cup and has taken on during various appearances since.
This double deployment of two of England’s most inventive players could add a fresh layer to the team’s offensive strategies. Yet, moving Marcus to the backline means losing Freddie Steward, who has proven to be a formidable presence in aerial duels.
Richard Wigglesworth, the attack coach, praised Marcus’s keen instincts on the field: “Marcus is obviously another set of eyes that are very opportunistic. ‘Where’s the space? Who can I beat?'” He acknowledged the trade-offs involved in selectors’ decisions, noting, “Freddie Steward brings an incredible level of high-ball skill and a kick return that is incredibly decisive.” He emphasized the depth of talent at fly-half, mentioning that while Fin has had fewer opportunities, his clarity and confidence in his role show promise. “He has all the things that you associate with top 10s,” Wigglesworth added.
Henry Slade, who plays inside centre, will collaborate closely with the selected fly-half. He emphasized the distinct attributes each player brings to the role. “Fin sees space really well,” Slade remarked, praising his tactical vision. He contrasted the styles, stating, “Marcus has got that X factor in terms of beating a man one-on-one… but Fin is very measured. He speaks very well.” Slade underscored the importance of a fly-half’s ability to navigate the team’s positioning on the pitch, which Fin has been adept at doing.
In a setback for the team, winger Cadan Murley will miss the match against France due to a foot injury suffered during his debut in Dublin. Wigglesworth expressed disappointment for Murley, highlighting the player’s resilience in overcoming injuries to earn his spot. “We’re gutted for Cadan. I’m delighted that he got his chance and really disappointed for him that it’s been taken away pretty quickly,” he stated.
