DUI Checkpoint in Smyrna Leads to Multiple Arrests and Citations
On December 27, a DUI checkpoint set up by Delaware State Police in Smyrna resulted in several arrests and numerous traffic citations. According to reports, five individuals were apprehended on charges of driving under the influence, out of 472 vehicles that were screened during the operation.
In addition to these arrests, officials issued a total of 32 traffic tickets. This checkpoint highlighted a broader enforcement effort, as police reported that nine DUI arrests have been made at checkpoints across Delaware this year, with a cumulative total of 14 arrests associated with such operations since they resumed.
Delaware Police Statistics: A previous checkpoint in Milford, conducted in September, marked the first such operation in the state since 2019.
Under Delaware law, drivers found with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 or higher can be convicted of DUI. Penalties for first-time offenders can include fines ranging from $500 to $1,500, along with potential imprisonment for up to one year.
Additionally, offenders may face the suspension of their driver’s licenses for a duration of one to two years. According to statistics from the Delaware Office of Highway Safety, there were 31 fatalities related to drug or alcohol impairment in 2023, underscoring the ongoing concern regarding impaired driving.
