Snap is reconsidering its approach to the design of Snapchat after reporting a loss of 1 million users in North America. In its Q1 2025 earnings report released on Tuesday, the company announced plans to experiment with a “refined” layout that maintains the existing five tabs within the app.
This shift comes after months of testing, likely in response to decreased user engagement and dissatisfaction. Snap indicated in its investor communication that “our most engaged Snapchatters consistently demonstrated a preference for a five-tab layout,” highlighting the importance of tile-based content discovery as well as the inclusion of a dedicated Map tab.
The revamped five-tab layout aims to integrate the best features of previous designs, promising to enhance the messaging experience with more Stories and improved accessibility to Spotlight, which will be positioned directly to the right of the camera button.
Although Snap has not disclosed the extent of the redesign’s rollout or its testing locations, the company reported a decline in North American users, dropping to 99 million daily active users, down from 100 million in Q4 2024. This stagnation in user numbers reflects a trend over the past three years.
On a more positive note, Snap observed a 14 percent year-over-year increase in revenue, amounting to $1.36 billion. This growth is attributed to heightened advertising efforts and the success of its Snapchat Plus subscription service. Additionally, the company experienced an increase in its global daily active users, rising to 460 million from 453 million during the previous quarter.
