Springfield experienced a significant snowfall late Thursday into early Friday, resulting in the closure of schools and several local offices, granting residents a snow day to enjoy the wintry weather.
Traffic conditions in the morning appeared to be moving at a slow but consistent pace. Cameras monitoring major thoroughfares in Springfield indicated that snow and slush persisted on many roadways without causing significant delays.
Snow Accumulation in Springfield
Measurements taken by meteorologist Angelica Soria from the National Weather Service’s Springfield office reported that the area received approximately 6 to 6.5 inches of snow by 10 a.m. Much of southwest Missouri recorded slightly lower totals, averaging between 5 to 6 inches.
According to forecasts, Springfield could see an additional inch of snow, though the National Weather Service anticipated that new snowfall would lessen by midday.
Families took full advantage of the snow day, with both children and adults engaging in activities such as sledding and enjoying the deep snow cover throughout Springfield on January 10, 2025.
Forecast for Melting Snow
The snow’s duration on the ground is expected to be short-lived, with temperatures projected to reach a high of 40 degrees on Saturday. However, forecasts indicate a drop below freezing on Monday, followed by a return to daytime temperatures in the high-30s and 40s later in the week.
Although the weekend is set to bring warmer temperatures, drivers are advised to exercise caution during the evening hours, as melting snow may create slick conditions once the temperature starts to drop.
Meteorologist Soria warns, “The snow will likely begin to melt during the day tomorrow, but concerns about re-freezing on the roads remain. As it turns slushy from plowing efforts, we want to advise everyone to travel with caution, particularly when nightfall makes black ice harder to see.”
