SoftBank and Fujitsu Collaborate on AI-RAN Technology
Tokyo and Kawasaki, Japan, Nov 13, 2024 – SoftBank Corp. and Fujitsu Limited have formalized their collaboration by signing a memorandum of understanding on October 25, 2024. This agreement aims to pave the way for the commercialization of AI-RAN, a cutting-edge architecture that synergizes artificial intelligence with Radio Access Networks (RAN). The companies intend to make significant strides in this area, targeting a commercial launch in 2026 and beyond.
As part of this initiative, SoftBank and Fujitsu will engage in joint research and development aimed at optimizing RAN performance using AI technologies. The duo will also establish a specialized verification lab at Fujitsu’s location in Dallas, Texas, to further these efforts.
In an initial step toward this goal, the companies have embarked on an outdoor proof-of-concept for AI-RAN, which SoftBank started in October 2024. Fujitsu contributes its virtual RAN (vRAN) software and Radio Units (RUs) to this project. Notably, this software is based on the NVIDIA AI Aerial platform, which operates on the powerful NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip. The collaboration has already demonstrated the capability to manage high-quality simultaneous communications across 20 cells per server.
Key Initiatives to Foster AI-RAN Development
To promote the swift realization of AI-RAN commercialization, the partnering firms will focus on several initiatives:
1. Establishment of a Verification Lab
A critical component of their collaboration is the creation of a verification lab in Dallas, Texas. This facility will serve multiple purposes, including the validation of hardware, software, and applications integral to AI-RAN. Additionally, it will function as a hub for fostering new business opportunities while enhancing the understanding and ecosystem surrounding AI-RAN. The lab will play a crucial role in validating the technology, thus facilitating its practical application in the global marketplace.
2. Advanced Development of vRAN Software
The companies will also pursue joint research and development projects aimed at enhancing vRAN software, specifically focusing on using AI to bolster RAN performance. Building on experiences from the outdoor proof-of-concept, efforts will aim at implementing AI solutions that not only improve communication quality in real-world situations but also expedite the commercialization of AI-RAN technology.
Through these initiatives, SoftBank and Fujitsu aspire to achieve enhanced investment efficiency in mobile infrastructure while driving innovation across various sectors. This collaboration is expected to significantly improve communication quality, particularly during peak mobility periods and network congestion, allowing for real-time response and analysis capabilities.
