Doom CAPTCHA: A New Twist on Classic Gaming
A novel WebAssembly application has emerged, showcasing a game inspired by the classic Doom. This project was developed using a user-friendly, prompt-driven web development tool called v0, which is part of a broader suite of services provided by Vercel, a cloud-based platform led by CEO Rauch. On the v0 website, users can explore the chat history of the LLM bot that facilitated the creation of this CAPTCHA game.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first attempt at creating a Doom-themed CAPTCHA. In 2021, developer Miquel Camps Orteza crafted a version that, while inspired by the game, used unofficial assets. This earlier iteration was also developed manually and is available on GitHub; however, Orteza cautioned that it lacks security features and was intended solely for amusement.
Rauch’s recent project, while equally playful, presents a more authentic representation of the Doom aesthetic.
However, those eager to encounter this game as a verification tool on actual websites should temper their expectations. The application is not secure, and its legality is questionable. Although the original Doom source code is open source, the game’s specific assets—such as enemy sprites and background textures that play a crucial role in this application—are copyrighted and not publicly available.
