Somy Ali also talked about Aamir Khan taking joint therapy sessions with his daughter Ira Khan. Read on to know what she has to say.

Parveen Babi passed away in January 2005.

Actress and mental health advocate Somy Ali has brought attention to the difficulties faced by Deepika Padukone in her journey with depression. Ali discussed the mockery and harsh criticism Padukone encountered from the public when she shared her struggles with mental health. In her commentary, Ali emphasized the importance of public figures discussing their mental health experiences, particularly referencing Padukone’s candid admission of her depression.

Somy remarked, “I have long been an advocate for using one’s platform to discuss mental health openly. When Deepika shared her experience on such a prominent stage, it marked a significant moment, not only for the film industry but globally. Unfortunately, I anticipated that she would face derision, being unfairly branded as seeking attention instead of receiving the compassion she deserved. Here was a prominent actress revealing her ongoing battle with severe depression and suicidal thoughts, yet instead of support, she was ridiculed. I was not surprised, as I often receive similar reactions for speaking truthfully without filtering my experiences.”

She further asserted, “Despite the negativity, Deepika should be acknowledged and celebrated. She deserves to be respected and honored—not just for her honesty but for establishing a mental health foundation. I express my gratitude to Deepika for her courage, especially considering my mother endured mental health issues and faced physical repercussions from her family and spouse. If someone had taken a stand like Deepika did years prior, perhaps we could have saved lives like Parveen Babi, who struggled with paranoid schizophrenia.”

Furthermore, Somy discussed Aamir Khan’s initiative of participating in therapy sessions with his daughter, Ira Khan. She commented, “This represents a significant step forward. I have always regarded Aamir Khan as one of the most insightful figures in the industry, alongside icons like Shah Rukh Khan and a select few others.”

Ali added, “With my background in psychology, holding a master’s degree in the field and having worked in mental health clinics, I firmly believe that everyone should consider attending therapy at least once a week—whether individually, with their children, or as a family. The benefits of such sessions are invaluable.”
