Mesquite, Texas — For Earl Guynes and his son Jared, their connection has always revolved around cars, sharing countless hours bonding over mechanical repairs and automotive discussions since Jared’s childhood.
One cherished topic that frequently came up in their conversations was Earl’s former 1967 Chevrolet Camaro.
“Whenever we spotted a Camaro, he would definitely mention it,” Jared recalled. “It became a recurring theme in our talks. His joke was that I had to sell that car to cover my diaper money.”
Yet, there was a grain of truth in Earl’s jest.
“I had to prepare for a nursery, find a crib and cradle; it was a phase of life when settling down became a priority,” Earl explained.
So in 1983, he bid farewell to his beloved hot rod and embraced the practicality of a minivan.
Since that moment, Earl redirected his passion for cars into assisting others as part of his work at O’Reilly Auto Parts in Mesquite, Texas. He continued to narrate the tale of the Camaro he once owned, a bittersweet reflection of his past.
Jared recognized that while Earl never truly regretted parting with the car, he still felt an obligation to do something special for his father. Thus began a three-year quest.
Finding an identical vehicle proved challenging, but Jared was undeterred. He diligently searched online for parts, meticulously restoring the Camaro piece by piece. Just last month, he revealed the finished project to Earl as a surprise gift for his father’s 65th birthday.
“When it hit him, he was just overwhelmed with emotions,” Jared recounted. “He wrapped his arms around me, and it was an unforgettable moment.”
Life often requires sacrifices, especially when starting a family. Yet, sometimes, with perseverance and love, it’s possible to reclaim what was once lost.
In Earl’s words, “He loves me a lot, just as much as I love him.”
