In his memoir, Q, Quincy Jones expressed his disdain for chart positions 2, 6, and 11, suggesting that an artist reaching these ranks, while still popular, often misses the opportunity to celebrate the prestige of a No. 1 hit. This sentiment resonates widely, as songs that peak at No. 2 can evoke a bittersweet feeling for their creators, as they land just shy of the pinnacle of success.
Interestingly, many tracks that have reached No. 2 have achieved remarkable cultural significance over time, often surpassing their contemporaries in recognition and influence. In some instances, these songs maintain their popularity strongly enough to outshine tracks that have topped the charts, even earning the title of the year’s most successful single.
Moreover, numerous No. 2 tracks have acted as pivotal moments in artists’ careers, propelling them towards later chart successes. A fortunate few have become iconic enough that their status as No. 2 hits might be forgotten, as they are often mistakenly remembered as chart-toppers in the minds of fans.
As we reflect on these significant pieces of music that achieved a No. 2 ranking, it’s essential to recognize their impact and legacy within pop culture. For February 2, we present Billboard’s official roundup of the 50 most notable songs to peak at No. 2 on the Hot 100 chart.
Billboard’s ranking of the biggest No. 2 hits is derived from weekly performance data on the Hot 100 through February 1, 2025, and includes only songs that reached the No. 2 position. The rankings utilize an inverse point system, where weeks spent at No. 1 carry the most weight, while lower positions contribute less. Due to shifting methodologies in chart tracking over the years, different eras are weighted accordingly to reflect varying turnover rates.
