In a surprising move, Sony has removed the film adaptation of the “Street Fighter” video game franchise from its release schedule, just weeks after director Kitao Sakurai was announced. This development raises questions about the future of the project and its potential new release date.
Additionally, the studio has rescheduled Tommy Wirkola’s shark thriller, originally titled “Beneath the Storm,” moving its premiere from August 2025 to July 3, 2026. The film has been renamed to “Shiver” and is expected to be a key entry in Sony’s upcoming slate of blockbuster films.
Kitao Sakurai, who earned an Emmy nomination, was designated to direct “Street Fighter” in February. The specifics of the film’s fate remain unclear, but should it be rescheduled, it will be developed in collaboration with Capcom, the renowned developer and publisher responsible for the iconic series of fighting games.
The last live-action adaptation of “Street Fighter” was released in 1994, featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming Na Wen, and Raul Julia. While the film was met with significant criticism, Julia’s performance was frequently acknowledged as a standout, despite the movie’s overall shortcomings.
As for “Shiver,” starring Phoebe Dynevor, details about the plot are currently scarce, but it is known to revolve around sharks. The cast also includes Whitney Peak and Djimon Hounsou. Wirkola not only directs but is also credited with the screenplay, with Adam McKay and Kevin Messick producing through their Hyperobject Industries label.
Wirkola gained recognition for directing “Violent Night,” a 2022 Christmas action film that features David Harbour as Santa Claus, delivering a unique twist reminiscent of the “Die Hard” narrative, turning the jolly figure into an unexpected action hero.
