Sony to Discontinue Free PlayStation Camera Adapter for PS5
Sony has announced that it will be ending the availability of its complimentary adapter that connects the PlayStation Camera to the PlayStation 5. This camera, initially launched for the PS4, is essential for utilizing the original PlayStation VR headset with the PS5, as the headset operates using a light-based tracking system. Notably, the PS5’s own HD camera accessory does not support PlayStation VR.
According to Sony, “As of November 26, 2024, or until supplies last, the PlayStation Camera adapter will no longer be available,” as stated on a support page. Until that date, users may still have the chance to request an adapter by filling out a request form. Alternatively, as highlighted by Wario64, individuals may need to reach out to Sony support directly at 1-800-345-7669, requiring the serial number from the PS VR’s processing unit to complete the request for an adapter.
For those who do not secure the official Sony accessory, various third-party alternatives are available in the market. However, the official adapter is provided at no cost, making it a desirable choice for many users.
It is important to note that games designed for the original PS VR do not function on the PS VR2, primarily due to the differing tracking technologies employed by the two headsets. While some titles have been successfully adapted for the newer VR headset and other virtual reality platforms, many first-party games remain exclusive to the original PS VR. To experience popular entries such as Astro Bot Rescue Mission or Everybody’s Golf VR on the PS5, obtaining a PlayStation Camera adapter will be essential.
