Welcome to Reality Derby, where we explore the fascinating world of reality television every week, brought to you by Gold Derby senior editors Marcus James Dixon and Denton Davidson.

This week, we’re excited to chat with Sophie Powers, a contestant from American Idol whose catchy track, “STFU,” gained significant attention, even after her elimination from the competition. At just 20 years old, this Canadian pop sensation and Instagram model opens up about her mixed reception from fans and critics, discusses the reason behind the bandage on her nose during the audition, and shares her impressions of the Season 23 judges: Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie. You can watch our full video interview above.

Sophie candidly remarks, “It seems I don’t have any original thoughts, because I was chosen for the show.” She expresses a playful willingness to embark on unexpected journeys, stating, “The show is iconic, and I thought it was amusing to be part of it as a Canadian.” She recognizes that the producers were familiar with her prior work on humorous songs, and she was aware of the challenges of competing on the show given her existing record label.

The reception of “STFU” has been polarized; some listeners embrace it while others do not. “To my supporters, you are the real ones,” Sophie affirms. “And to my critics, I completely understand — I’d feel the same way if I were an outsider watching someone make such bold choices on a platform meant for serious performances. But in this artistic space, we’re all part of the family.”

Sophie admits she didn’t follow American Idol much during her childhood in Canada, saying, “The only times I watched were for those compilations of terrible auditions.” Her unconventional aspiration was to be featured on the show’s “top 10 worst auditions of all time.” Despite her playful outlook, Sophie acknowledges the significance of being featured on such a revered program.

Reflecting on her experiences with the judges, she notes, “Carrie had a look of disbelief,” adding, “Lionel perhaps reminisced about a younger Nicole while watching my performance.” Regarding Luke’s reaction, she shares humorously, “He actually asked me to sing again. If you want to see it, just let me know, Luke!”

Sophie provides insight into her decision to wear a bandage on her nose for the audition, explaining, “I create most of my outfits and love experimenting with different looks. For a new artist, maintaining a recognizable identity can be tough. I thought wearing the Band-Aid would help people identify me, no matter my wig or outfit. I’ve removed it since, but it made a statement for the audition.”

During her audition, she recalls that host Ryan Seacrest seemed puzzled by her happiness after receiving three ‘no’ votes. She explained her perspective: “I told him that I’d be worried if they said yes.” This indicates her understanding and acceptance of the competitive nature of the show.

If American Idol were to invite her back for a live performance during the finale, Sophie would likely consider the opportunity, stating, “I think I’d agree, but who knows what the future holds?” Fans can anticipate her next single dropping on April 4, which she hints will be quite different from “STFU.” Additionally, she’s set to perform at the Warped Tour festival. In closing, Sophie shares her hopes for her audience: “I hope everyone starts off a little less annoyed. We could all benefit from a little quiet.”
