Historic Church in Pullman Neighborhood Seeks Community Support Amid Financial Struggles

A historic church located in the Pullman neighborhood is currently grappling with a significant financial challenge due to an overwhelming gas bill that threatens its existence. The Greenstone United Methodist Church, a cherished community hub, has temporarily closed its doors during the winter months as efforts to secure its future continue.

As the Easter season approaches, signs of hope are emerging outside the church, which dates back to 1882 and boasts a rare 19th-century Steere and Turner organ, along with many of its original stained-glass windows. The church’s dedication to serving the community remains strong despite the current hardships.

“They suddenly faced an unexpectedly high utility bill,” explained Roderick Lewis, a long-time neighbor who has resided in the area for two decades. He reflects the sentiments of many who have deep ties to the Pullman community and the church, which has been a gathering place for generations. “The community looks out for the church, and in turn, the church supports the community,” he remarked.

Lewis has initiated a fundraising campaign with a goal of raising $20,000 to address the outstanding gas bill that the church cannot manage alone. He emphasized the communal spirit, stating, “It became too overwhelming for them to handle, so they reached out to us for assistance. Here, we bond like a family; when one of us is in need, we all come together to help.”

To date, the campaign has made significant progress, nearing its target with just a few thousand dollars left to raise. However, operations at the church have been suspended during the colder months due to the gas being shut off. The church is much more than a place for Sunday worship; it serves as a vital community center where various activities, including dinners, clubs, and lectures, take place.

Looking ahead, the church aims to reopen its doors year-round, but the work will extend beyond settling the utility bill. Plans are in place to allocate any additional donations towards essential repairs, such as fixing the heating system to prevent future disruptions.

For those who wish to contribute, the church has established a GoFundMe page to facilitate donations.

Community Resilience in Action

This situation highlights the resilience and solidarity of the Pullman community, showcasing how neighbors come together in times of need. The future of Greenstone United Methodist Church will depend not only on the efforts to alleviate the current financial burden but also on the community’s commitment to nurturing this historic institution, ensuring that it remains a central part of the neighborhood’s fabric for years to come.
