Details on Southwest checked bag changes

Southwest Airlines, historically known for its flexible open seating, is introducing a new fare structure for travelers as it prepares for the transition to an assigned seating model next year. This revamped fare bundle will include various options for seating, checked baggage, and boarding, and is expected to be available for booking in the third quarter, targeting flights slated for departure in 2026, as noted by the airline in an official statement.

“With new choices like seat selection and Extra Legroom, our enhanced fare bundles let Customers customize their trip while still enjoying our industry-leading reliability and hospitality,” remarked Tony Roach, the airline’s executive vice president of customer and brand.

To coincide with this announcement, Southwest has initiated a promotion that offers discounts of up to 30% on all base fares. This development follows the airline’s decision last year to discontinue its long-standing open-seating policy, which had been a defining characteristic of its innovative business strategy. Additionally, they confirmed earlier this year that the “bags fly free” policy will also be phased out starting May 28.

What are Southwest’s new seating options?

Southwest revealed that its aircraft will feature three distinct seating options:

The first category includes seats with up to five extra inches of legroom and preferred boarding privileges. This arrangement will allow passengers early access to the overhead storage. These seats will be strategically located in two areas: one at the front of the aircraft and another near the exit rows in the middle section. The second seating option will be positioned closer to the front but will not offer additional legroom. Lastly, the standing seating will be located at the rear of the aircraft without extra legroom benefits.

While the specific pricing for these new seating options has not yet been disclosed, it has been communicated that cardholders will have the benefit of selecting their seats and receiving a “boarding benefit,” along with the added advantage of one complimentary checked bag.

What are the new fare options?

In addition, Southwest will introduce four “fare bundles,” enabling customers to conveniently choose their seating, checked baggage, and boarding preferences in a single package. The fare categories include Choice Extra, Choice Preferred, Choice, and Basic.

Choice Extra includes extra legroom seating, complimentary checked bags, and pre-boarding privileges. Choice Preferred allows for booking in the preferred seating area and early general boarding. Choice provides a standard seat assignment. Finally, Basic assigns seats at check-in and comes with the most limitations.
