:: April 28, 2025
:: Pedro Sanchez, Prime Minister of Spain
“At this point, we lack definitive information regarding the reasons behind this outage. I urge the public, as we have during other crises, to stay informed through official sources.” // “It is prudent to avoid speculation. We will ascertain the causes. Every hypothesis remains on the table, but our immediate priority must be to restore electricity to households.” // “Currently, there are no signs of civil protection issues. I assure you, there are no security concerns.”
A significant power outage affected both Spain and Portugal, leading to disruptions in public transportation, extensive traffic jams, and delays at airports.
As utility companies worked to restore power, the Spanish electricity transmission operator, Red Eléctrica, indicated that the outage’s origins were still unclear and could potentially persist for six to ten hours.
Officials are investigating various potential causes, including the possibility of a cyber attack.
In response to the situation, both Spanish and Portuguese government officials convened to address the blackout, which also momentarily impacted certain areas in France, leading to the establishment of a crisis committee in Spain, according to sources familiar with developments.
