Spotify has raised concerns over Apple’s adherence to the Digital Markets Act (DMA), with CEO Daniel Ek accusing the tech giant of intentionally delaying compliance. Ek called upon the European Union to take action against Apple for what he describes as a lack of genuine effort in meeting the requirements of the law.
Ek criticized Apple’s approach to the DMA as “a farce,” pointing out that the company continues to impose fees and conditions that disadvantage app developers. This comes after Apple faced a €1.8 billion fine for its previous violations related to its dominance in the music streaming sector.
Teresa Ribera, the EU’s competition chief, indicated that the determination on Apple’s compliance will be made public in March. In response, Apple contends that it has taken sufficient steps to comply with the regulations, even going so far as to publish a white paper outlining its perspective on the EU’s laws concerning interoperability.
The ongoing dispute between Spotify and Apple traces back to legal proceedings that found the latter guilty of restricting other platforms from promoting more affordable options outside of the iOS app, which effectively coerces users into making purchases through the App Store and diminishes the earnings of developers.
In defense of its practices, Apple argued that Spotify benefits significantly from its position within the European market, asserting that the streaming service relies on “Apple’s tools and technologies” and enjoys the trust built by Apple with its user base.
