On Wednesday, Spotify experienced significant technical difficulties, with around 50,000 users reporting issues via Downdetector.
The company provided an update on the social media platform X shortly after noon EDT, expressing gratitude to listeners for their understanding during the outage.
“Spotify encountered an outage starting at approximately 6:20 AM EDT. We are pleased to inform that as of 11:45 AM EDT, the service has been restored and is operating normally,” the company stated.
No further information was given regarding the nature or extent of the disruptions.
In response to Spotify’s announcement, users took to the platform to share their frustrations and humor about the situation.
“I’ll just hum to myself,” quipped user @alexissTyler.
Recently, Spotify celebrated its first year of profitability, revealing that it had distributed an unprecedented $10 billion in royalties to the music sector. Data from the company’s annual Loud and Clear Report indicated that nearly 1,500 artists individually earned over $1 million, with more than 80% of these artists not having a song that reached the platform’s Global Daily Top 50 Chart.
The platform has also introduced new advertising capabilities recently. Earlier this April, Spotify unveiled generative artificial intelligence ads and reported that automated ad channels facilitated $2 billion in advertising expenditures with digital audio since the start of the year.
Of Spotify’s 675 million monthly active users, over half utilize the free version of the service, which includes advertisements during music playback.
