Meet Abraham Menéndez and his loyal dog, Manolito.
Madrid, a sprawling metropolis, occasionally takes on the charm of a quaint village where familiar faces greet you at every turn. Abraham Menéndez exemplifies this connection; a dynamic illustrator whose portfolio boasts work for names like Chanel, Hermès, and Sony. Whether he’s attending glamorous soirées, strolling through the narrow streets of historic Madrid with Manolito, or savoring a traditional cocido—his top choice being that served at Malacatín, a tavern steeped in history—Abraham embodies the spirit of a true Madrilenian, despite his non-local roots.
Interestingly, one of his latest endeavors involves portraying Madrid through a series of posters commissioned by the City Council. Although Abraham is an ambitious traveler, he passionately advocates for exploring the hidden treasures right outside one’s door: “You can discover incredible things just a 20-minute walk from home. Step outside and see! Madrid is teeming with delightful surprises.”
Among the cultural gems Abraham encourages visitors to explore is the renowned Prado Museum, where the art and history of the city come alive.
What would you say is the sweetest time of year to visit Madrid?
Springtime cannot be beat, particularly when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The weather is ideal for leisurely strolls, making it the perfect time to explore the charming streets of Madrid de los Austrias, or the literary neighborhood, Barrio de Las Letras. Stopping at one of the many tascas or taverns is an experience that truly enhances the visit.
Among Abraham’s favorite spots to enjoy on his outings is La Rosaleda, located within the picturesque Parque del Oeste.
What do you love about it?
On a leisurely Sunday, I relish visiting the Parque del Oeste with my dog Manolito. Walking past the Royal Palace, Plaza de España, the Temple of Debod, and through the Parque de La Bombilla and La Rosaleda, we find ourselves in a lush oasis adorned with colorful flowers and greenery. It’s akin to stepping into the countryside while remaining within the city limits. The tranquility of the park often allows for peaceful moments away from the crowds, providing a perfect sanctuary to rejuvenate before the week ahead.
