Shoojit Sircar reminisces about his early days with Shah Rukh Khan in Delhi.
The captivating romance between Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan has long been a topic of interest for fans. Often regarded as royalty in the film industry, their love story blossomed in the vibrant streets of Delhi before they moved to Mumbai. Renowned filmmaker Shoojit Sircar, who shared theater spaces with Shah Rukh in the early days, recently shared his reflections on their relationship during a conversation on the show Unfiltered with Samdish.
Discussing his connection with Shah Rukh, Sircar noted, “I knew Shah Rukh from our days in the Barry John theater group. While I didn’t act alongside him, I was part of that environment.” He fondly recalled, “There’s a spot called Depaul Cafe in Connaught Place where he used to come with Gauri for coffee.” Sircar expressed that he had observed Shah Rukh’s romantic side in real life, although he never witnessed him performing on stage. “I’ve seen him in romance but never on stage,” he stated.
The narrative surrounding Shah Rukh and Gauri’s relationship resembles a cinematic tale. They first crossed paths in their teenage years, with Shah Rukh, only 18, instantly captivated by Gauri’s charm. Their first encounter occurred at a party in Delhi, where a nervous Shah Rukh managed to speak to Gauri for five brief minutes over colas before they parted ways. As luck would have it, he later acquired her number, leading to his pursuit of her heart. Following a meaningful courtship, they tied the knot in October 1991.
In a candid interview from the 90s with Leheren, Shah Rukh Khan revealed the depth of understanding required to appreciate their relationship. “It’s a bond that others might not fully grasp. If you were my wife, you’d understand,” he remarked. He continued, “The nuances of a relationship—especially between a husband and wife—are incredibly intimate and personal. No outsider can truly understand it.”
He further elaborated, explaining that the closeness shared in their private moments is often imperceptible to others. “What happens in the bedroom is something that cannot be comprehended from the outside,” he asserted. He acknowledged that while people may form opinions on his demeanor, the reality of their love is known only to them, noting that even after articulation, the essence may remain elusive to outsiders.
The couple expanded their family six years post-marriage, welcoming their son Aryan, followed by their daughter Suhana in 2000, and later, in 2013, they celebrated the arrival of their third child, AbRam Khan.
