This month, some recipients of Social Security may notice an unusual occurrence with their payments, as certain individuals will receive three checks in their bank accounts.
Recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will be receiving two checks in May—one for the month of May and another for June—due to particular scheduling outlined by the Social Security Administration (SSA).
Approximately 7.4 million Americans receive monthly SSI payments, many of whom may be disabled or have limited resources. Notably, around one-third of these recipients also receive benefits from traditional Social Security, resulting in some individuals experiencing three payments this May.
For traditional Social Security recipients, payments are distributed on Wednesdays, dependent on birth dates. Those born between the 1st and 10th receive payments on the second Wednesday of the month, which falls on May 14 this year; those born between the 11th and 20th will be paid on the third Wednesday (May 21); and recipients with birthdays after the 20th will receive their payments on the fourth Wednesday (May 28), as specified in the SSA calendar.
Recipients who began their benefits prior to May 1997 are scheduled to receive their payments on the 3rd of the month. If they also qualify for SSI, that payment will be deposited on the 1st.
As was the case in February, May will similarly bring two checks for SSI beneficiaries. The payment for May is expected to be issued on May 1, with the June payment following on May 30, a change necessitated by June 1 falling on a weekend.
Consequently, SSI recipients will not receive any payment during June, just as they experienced in March.
This specific payment structure will recur in August, when SSI recipients will receive payments on August 1 for August and again on August 29 for September, leading to no payment in September.
Additionally, checks will once again be distributed in October, but recipients will not see any payment in November, per the SSA calendar.
The scheduled dates for Supplemental Security Income checks for 2025 are as follows, according to the SSA calendar:
Thursday, May 1, 2025 (May 2025 payment)
Friday, May 30, 2025 (June 2025 payment)
Tuesday, July 1, 2025 (July 2025 payment)
Friday, Aug. 1, 2025 (August 2025 payment)
Friday, Aug. 29, 2025 (September 2025 payment)
Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025 (October 2025 payment)
Friday, Oct. 31, 2025 (November 2025 payment)
Monday, Dec. 1, 2025 (December 2025 payment)
Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025 (January 2026 payment)
