Controversy Erupts Following Elimination on The Challenge

The recent episode of The Challenge aired on September 4, and it has sparked a heated debate among cast members regarding the results of the elimination round between Horacio Gutierrez Jr. and Derrick Kosinski. While Derrick was declared the winner, the circumstances surrounding the finale of the arena battle have led to questions and criticism from fellow contestants.

In the elimination round, aptly named “Pick It Up,” the two competitors were tasked with throwing balls into a chute and gathering jacks to complete their board consisting of 40 jacks. The competition was closely contested, with Derrick needing to collect three jacks in the final moments while Horacio required just one to finish.

After the conclusion of the challenge, host T.J. Lavin announced Derrick as the first player to successfully place all 40 jacks on the board. However, this declaration was met with skepticism by some in attendance and even among the contestants themselves.

Devin Walker took to social media to voice his discontent with the outcome, labeling the decision as “horsesh**.” In a series of Instagram Stories videos, he analyzed the footage from the elimination’s concluding moments, highlighting a moment he believed showed an empty peg on Derrick’s board just after the final horn sounded. When the camera returned, he argued, the peg was inexplicably in place.

“Casual, Horacio’s casual. Puts it in. Horn blows. Pause it right there. What’s that? What’s Derrick stopping, dropping his ball? What’s that? …. Then all of a sudden, where the f*** did this peg come from?” Devin expressed in frustration. “Horsesh**… Horacio won.”

Supporting this criticism was Nurys Mateo, Horacio’s girlfriend and fellow competitor, who, despite being eliminated prior to the episode airing, reacted strongly on Twitter. She expressed her outrage at what she perceived as misconduct by the production team, stating, “THE F***ING LIES FROM PRODUCTION!! I’m f**ing lividdddddd… You CLEARLY see he’s missing a peg…” She emphasized that the rules mandated all pegs needed to be in place before a check could be called.

Derrick Kosinski responded directly to Nurys’s allegations, suggesting that the board might have been in disarray and that the peg could have fallen out during their celebration. Despite this, Mateo maintained that Derrick’s board was incomplete when the match concluded.

This is your board before the dab up so no it didn’t fall out when you did that. If you were getting your pegs picked up, so should’ve Horacio. I know they don’t show it but his would fall and he was in charge of picking his up but you got help? Make it make sense. https://t.co/p6dOjaw8ai pic.twitter.com/QUXaS6F3s4

The ongoing controversy has attracted input from other competitors as well. Rachel Robinson also jumped into the conversation, insisting on social media that Derrick’s win was indisputable: “They had to fix Aneesa’s multiple times too… @DerrickMTV won this without any question. I saw it myself.”

Support for Kosinski has also come from the newer generation of contestants. Emily Schromm, a competitor from Era 2, weighed in with her perspective, sharing an image that illustrated the state of Derrick’s pegs, arguing that T.J.’s clarification of the rules indicated that the jacks only needed to be on the wall, not necessarily in their specific holes. She stated, “People are losing their minds haha. Just an fyi TJ said rules were ‘first to put all pegs on the wall’. Not ‘in the hole’. ON THE WALL.”
