In a significant milestone for autonomous delivery, Starship Technologies Inc. announced that it has successfully completed over 8 million deliveries and traveled more than 10 million miles worldwide. The company’s sidewalk delivery robots have become a common sight, functioning as efficient couriers for groceries, meals, and various essentials across different locales.
“While many robotics firms are still in the exploratory phase with limited prototypes, we are demonstrating a viable solution in real-world scenarios,” remarked Ahti Heinla, co-founder and CEO of Starship. “With millions of deliveries already executed, we are not just envisioning what the future holds — we are actively part of it.”
Established in 2014 by Skype pioneers Heinla and Janus Friis, Starship has quietly risen to prominence in the domain of sidewalk delivery robots. The company highlighted that its recent accomplishment, featuring over 2,000 robots operating at SAE Level 4 autonomy in more than 150 locations across six countries, marks a significant milestone in its growth and technological progress.
Starship as a leader in autonomous technology
Despite the reluctance of many sidewalk delivery robot manufacturers to share their delivery statistics, Starship asserts that its operational scale is notably robust when compared to other leaders in related industries.

Expanding delivery robot market
The global market for delivery robots is projected to witness remarkable expansion, with an anticipated compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 64% between 2022 and 2032. This growth could lead to a total of 4.7 million operational robots by the decade’s end, as reported by Transforma Insights.
As advancements in autonomous vehicles progress, Starship emphasized its achievement of 8 million deliveries, indicating an impressive flow of operations that includes navigating approximately 125,000 roads and driveways each day — averaging about two crossings every second.
The company is also committed to sustainability, noting that its electric robots consume energy equivalent to boiling a small kettle for each average delivery. Starship claims to have prevented over 500 tons of CO2 emissions in Europe, presenting a greener alternative to automobile-based grocery shopping.
