New Russian Ambassador to the U.S. to Present Credentials
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The newly appointed Russian ambassador to the United States is set to formally present his credentials to the Trump administration today. This event is significant as it marks the re-establishment of ambassadorial relations between the two nations after a hiatus.
Alexander Darchiev, who recently took on the role of ambassador, will conduct this informal presentation at 2:15 PM Eastern Time (1815 GMT), as indicated by the U.S. State Department’s schedule.
Attending the ceremony will be Louis L. Bono, the Senior Bureau official for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, highlighting the official U.S. representation in this diplomatic engagement.
Notably, Moscow has not had an ambassador in Washington since October when the previous envoy departed. Darchiev brings with him extensive experience, having served in Russia’s embassy in Washington during two significant periods and holding the position of ambassador to Canada from 2014 to 2021. His tenure in these roles has been characterized by outspoken criticisms of U.S. policies, mirroring the sentiments of many senior Russian diplomats in recent years.
The ambassador’s arrival comes at a pivotal moment as both countries seek to navigate their strained relations and strive towards resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed a desire to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon, marking the first direct engagement between the leaders since 2021.
This development emphasizes the evolving diplomatic landscape and the urgency on both sides to repair ties that have been tested by various geopolitical events.
