Stefano Vukov’s Suspension from WTA Tour Confirmed
Stefano Vukov, the former coach of elite tennis player Elena Rybakina, has had his suspension from the WTA Tour confirmed following an independent investigation into his conduct towards the player. This decision, which upholds the provisional suspension imposed earlier this year, reinforces the seriousness with which the WTA addresses allegations of misconduct.
In January, Vukov was initially suspended under allegations of breaching the WTA’s Code of Conduct. On Tuesday, the WTA, the governing organization for women’s tennis, announced that the findings of the investigation support the continuation of his ban.
Despite facing serious allegations, Vukov has firmly denied any wrongdoing. Furthermore, Rybakina has publicly stated that she did not experience any mistreatment during their time working together. This aspect adds a layer of complexity to the situation, reflecting differing perceptions of the coach’s conduct.
The WTA communicated to BBC Sport that the investigation’s conclusion resulted in the ongoing suspension. They emphasized the importance of maintaining confidentiality and the integrity of the investigative process, stating: “To protect the confidentiality and integrity of the investigation and its findings, the WTA will not provide further details. We remain committed to ensuring that all matters are handled in a fair and objective manner in accordance with the WTA Code of Conduct.”
The governing body did not disclose the duration of Vukov’s ban or specify which particular sections of the Code of Conduct he is alleged to have violated. However, it should be noted that Vukov retains the option to appeal this decision.
This ruling presents a significant hurdle for Rybakina, who had intentions of reinstating Vukov to her coaching team in the new year. The ongoing uncertainty surrounding his status may influence her preparations and performance in upcoming tournaments.
In response to the ongoing developments, BBC Sport has reached out to Vukov for further comments regarding the situation.
