[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Fire Country Season 3 Episode 18 “Eyes and Ears Everywhere.”]

Gabriela (played by Stephanie Arcila) faces unsettling challenges in her romantic life on Fire Country. Just as she begins to move past her complex relationship with Bode (Max Thieriot), a new love interest, Finn (Blake Lee), reveals a darker side.

In the episode aired on April 18, Finn’s obsession escalates alarmingly when he sets fire to his own house, leading to a dramatic rescue by Gabriela. As they rushed to the hospital via ambulance, the rest of the team uncovered Finn’s disturbing behavior; they found his basement was filled with photos capturing Gabriela’s every move. Vince (Billy Burke) intervened just in time to protect her, but Finn, armed with a scalpel, managed to escape.

Meanwhile, Jake (Jordan Calloway) received an enticing job offer in Butte, which could lead to a captain position and potentially a battalion chief role. This prospect highlights the stark career limitations he faces at the 42 station, a fact Vince recognizes during their conversation towards the episode’s conclusion. At the same time, Bode and Manny (Kevin Alejandro) confront the challenges posed by Oxalta, navigating their Non-Disclosure Agreements to secure a settlement with help from Sharon (Diane Farr) and Renee (Constance Zimmer), who is actively pursuing a class action lawsuit despite receiving threats.

Following the episode, Arcila shared her thoughts on Gabriela’s tumultuous love life, her lingering feelings for Bode, and the overall narrative arc.

Finn’s actions clearly indicate he poses a serious threat. Considering that, do you believe Gabriela was truly prepared for a new relationship?

Stephanie Arcila: Gabriela yearns for a deep connection, which could stem from unmet needs in her past. Initially, she might think, “This seems like a good person; maybe I should allow myself to feel something.” However, the realization that Finn is dangerous changes everything. She has a lot to unpack and will likely need time to reflect on her experiences and the red flags that she may have overlooked.

What was your initial reaction to the plot twist involving Finn, especially with the discovery of his basement?

I was completely taken aback. Reading that script for the first time left me stunned. However, I see the value in shedding light on such serious issues that many face. It’s a crucial topic that needs more visibility, emphasizing the importance of recognizing warning signs and being equipped to protect oneself.

Filming those ambulance scenes must have been intense—how did Gabriela cope with losing control?

Gabriela has always been a fighter, trying to resolve conflicts and take care of others, sometimes even stepping into a maternal role for her father. Exploring her vulnerability in scenarios where she lacks control is intriguing, particularly given her background as an Olympic diver where she often had to manage situations that were chaotic. It’s fascinating to see her balance this struggle and ultimately find strength in letting go.

At the end of the episode, when Manny asks Gabriela about her gun, what mental state do you think she is in regarding its use?

She is not prepared at all. An overwhelming combination of emotions floods her mind—concern for her father and fear of abandonment weigh heavily on her. Despite having built a family at Edgewater, the fear of losing her only remaining family member is daunting. The Perez family’s “we’ll handle things as they come” mentality reflects a coping mechanism she is growing accustomed to.

The moment when the Perez family is together before the chaos begins was very heartwarming. What does that scene mean for Gabriela?

That scene brings a sense of hope and relief for Gabriela and Manny. It allows Gabriela a moment to exhale and feel a sense of belonging and support.

Is Gabriela genuinely aware of the threat Finn poses, or is she underestimating him?

She believes he will run away and doesn’t grasp the situation’s seriousness. While she remains cautious, she is still unaware of the full extent of the danger he represents.

Despite her attempts to move forward with Finn, how does Gabriela currently feel about Bode?

Her feelings for Bode are complicated and intertwined with a sense of impossible love. Sometimes, people simply need time apart to grow, which can lead to a new or different relationship. The love they share is profound, and distancing themselves allows for personal growth without losing sight of that bond. Exploring connections with others is part of that healing process.

It’s evident they share a strong connection. Is it challenging for them to transition back to friendship?

Yes, it is difficult to reframe their dynamic when they never truly established a friendship beforehand. However, this journey is also about learning and growth, and whatever relationship evolves will feel authentic.

Gabriela’s friendship with Audrey has become a delightful aspect of the series. What value does this relationship bring to her life?

Gabriela benefits from the female camaraderie that accompanies this friendship, contrasting her otherwise male-dominated environment. It’s refreshing to see her experiencing this dynamic, providing her with opportunities for growth and support.

What unique qualities does Audrey contribute to Gabriela’s life?

Audrey embodies fearlessness, having faced her own struggles. While both women have undergone hardships, Audrey’s boldness encourages Gabriela to embrace the unpredictable nature of life. This balance is enjoyable to explore on screen.

With Jake potentially leaving the 42 station, how would Gabriela react to his departure?

They’ve transitioned from dating to a supportive friendship, almost like siblings. His departure would create a void within their tight-knit community, leaving Gabriela with a sense of loss.

What aspirations do you have for Gabriela’s character going forward?

I hope to see Gabriela take charge of her own destiny, overcoming challenges on her own without relying on others for salvation. Highlighting the resilience and strength inherent in women is vital. I want her to continue nurturing herself through this transition.

Having co-stars like Max, Kevin, and Diane directing must add a unique dynamic. How has that experience been?

Collaboration with actor-directors brings a special familiarity to the set. Their understanding of the show’s essence often leads to enriching creative exchanges. It enhances our collective experiences and showcases the diverse skills our cast possesses.

What has been your favorite scene to film this season?

One of my favorites was the emotionally charged bathroom scene in an episode directed by Kevin, where I shadow-directed as well. It pushed me to express vulnerable feelings about family and betrayal and the complexities of relationships. The emotional weight of that scene, combined with the experience of working closely with Kevin, made it especially memorable.

How did the shadow directing opportunity unfold for you?

I thoroughly enjoyed the shadow directing experience. Kevin has been not only a mentor but also a friend, generously sharing his knowledge and allowing me to contribute creatively. This experience has been invaluable, and I am grateful for the chance to learn from him, as well as for the opportunity offered by Jerry Bruckheimer and CBS to step into this role.
