The spotlight has sharply turned towards women’s fencer Stephanie Turner, who has recently emerged as a prominent voice among advocates for women’s rights in sports.
A video showcasing Turner kneeling in protest against a transgender competitor has sparked renewed discussions on the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports, particularly in the realm of fencing.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Turner expressed the personal toll of her decision, stating, “It will probably, at least for the moment, destroy my life. It’s very hard for me to do this.”
Turner’s stance is firmly rooted in her opposition to competing against biological males, which she believes poses significant implications for the integrity of women’s sports. “This is a serious issue that is happening within all sports, and it needs to be addressed. There is a difference between men and women,” she asserted. “It is a civil rights movement for women and girls, and I prioritize the safety and rights and protection of women and girls over trans-identified males.”
The issue has propelled her to reconsider her long-standing political affiliations. Having registered as a Democrat for years, Turner has recently switched to supporting the Republican party, outlining her discontent with what she describes as an extreme liberal perspective that she believes is undermining women’s sports. “A small group of people is holding a much larger athlete base hostage to extremist liberal views,” she said.
How did she find herself in this contentious situation?
From a Liberal Background to Controversial Activism
Turner’s journey began in Washington D.C., and she currently resides in Montgomery County, Maryland, a region known for its progressive values.
Within her circle of friends, many are part of the LGBT community, making her vocal opposition to transgender women in sports a source of personal conflict. “They did not know I had this opinion about transgender women in women’s sports,” she noted, pointing out her close friendship with an LGBT individual from her fencing club. “I love them on a personal level… I don’t want to lose them as friends.”
However, Turner also feels a lack of opportunity for honest dialogue about the subject, citing frustration with what she perceives as dishonesty surrounding the impact of hormone treatment on sports performance.
Her Fencing Journey and Awareness of Trans Inclusivity
At the age of 31, Turner has spent over a decade in competitive fencing, having started at 19 while attending the University of Maryland. She remains actively involved in the sport, boasting an impressive record, including numerous podium finishes.
Her Fencing Tracker page highlights her achievements, including a gold medal in women’s foil at a recent competition. Despite her success, Turner has always been cautious about the USA Fencing policy regarding transgender athletes, which allows competitors who have undergone testosterone suppression treatment to enter the women’s division.
Turner described her growing awareness of transgender inclusion in fencing events, recalling her discomfort at competing against transgender athletes, which prompted her to withdraw from competitions where they were present.
A Pivotal Moment at the Cherry Blossom Open
Turner consistently avoided registering for competitions known to include transgender athletes. However, the scenario took an unexpected turn at a recent Division I-A event known as the Cherry Blossom Open, where she discovered that she was scheduled to compete against a trans woman, Redmond Sullivan. Turner only became aware of Sullivan’s registration late the previous night, prompting her to contemplate a new course of action.
“I had contemplated in the future that I wanted to avoid not registering for events, just because a transgender person was there,” Turner reflected. Ultimately, she resolved to kneel in protest if she encountered a transgender opponent, seeing it as a way to potentially advocate for her beliefs. “If this person shows up into my event, and they’re on my strip, then I will take a knee, and that would be God’s will,” she stated.
Just before her match, she requested a friend to film her protest, understanding the potential consequences but feeling compelled to express her beliefs publicly.
Her action, however, resulted in her immediate disqualification from the event — a decision that left her feeling stripped of her ability to communicate with her fellow competitors.
Impact and Reaction to Turner’s Protest
Turner did not seek the role of a public figure or activist; she appreciates her privacy and had hoped for changes from governing sports bodies rather than taking such a stark stand herself. “I was hoping someone else would come forward or the board of directors would have a change of heart,” she confessed.
In December, a nonprofit organization involved in fencing had appealed to USA Fencing to reconsider their transgender policies, yet no changes were made.
Since her protest, Turner has emerged as a focal point in the ongoing national conversation about transgender athletes in women’s sports. Her story has reached various media platforms, and she has even appeared in a commercial highlighting her stance.
Through her experiences, Turner aims to hold organizations like USA Fencing accountable, believing her actions serve as a critical test for common sense in the current political climate. “Something needs to be done,” she declared.
USA Fencing responded to the incident, asserting that their transgender athlete policy aims to foster inclusivity and participation in the sport. A spokesperson emphasized respect for differing perspectives while highlighting that Turner’s disqualification was the result of her refusal to compete against an eligible opponent as per the federation’s rules.
“In the case of Stephanie Turner, her disqualification was not related to any personal statement but was merely the direct result of her decision to decline to fence an eligible opponent, which the FIE rules clearly prohibit,” the spokesperson clarified.
