Stephen Colbert Celebrates Easter on 4/20
Famed observant Catholic and late-night host Stephen Colbert is gearing up to celebrate Easter this year in a way that aligns with his characteristic humor. During Thursday night’s episode of “The Late Show,” Colbert expressed his amusement at the coincidence of Easter falling on April 20, popularly known as 4/20.
“I’d like to begin by wishing you all a Happy Easter, because this year, especially this year, Easter is on 420,” he announced enthusiastically at the start of his monologue. “This Sunday, He is risen, and you is high.”
For those unfamiliar with it, 4/20 has become a cultural reference point associated with cannabis consumption, turning April 20th into a sort of unofficial holiday for enthusiasts of marijuana. Colbert seized on this cultural moment to engage his audience further.
“So how did these two significant holidays align this year?” he pondered, while flashing a grin. “Well, Easter is determined by the first Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal equinox,” he explained. “You can easily remember this with a simple rhyme: full moon before Equinox, don’t move Jesus’s rocks. Equinox before moon, he will rise soon.”
His jokes garnered laughs, prompting him to quip, “Thank you. And also with you,” as he playfully acknowledged the audience’s reaction.
Colbert humorously suggested that the pairing of Easter and 4/20 felt fitting, remarking that the creator of Easter traditions must have been under the influence when devising them. He adopted a mock stoner persona, saying, “Okay, okay, listen how we’re gonna celebrate Jesus being alive again. You know Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. And then there’s gonna be a rabbit, and he is, okay, he wears a bow tie. I don’t know why he’s got a bow tie. And he lays eggs, and they’re not normal eggs; they’re colorful and filled with chocolate. Also, everything is candied, even the ham.”
“Today, that was my character, ‘stoned guy,’” Colbert remarked with a straight face, adding to the comedic atmosphere of the show.
In addition to his Easter musings, Colbert touched on various current events, including a meeting between Donald Trump and Italy’s Prime Minister, as well as ongoing discussions about unnecessary government budget cuts. This blend of lightheartedness and political commentary is a hallmark of Colbert’s late-night approach.
