Colbert Addresses Economic Downturn Amid Tariff Concerns
Stephen Colbert took to his monologue to express his unease regarding the latest economic developments, mirroring the sentiments of many viewers. With the impact of President Trump’s tariffs on the economy front and center, Colbert referenced Trump’s early handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, interweaving humor with critique.
“Today was the first day of trading on Wall Street since Trump slathered our economy in honey and staked it down next to a fire ant hill, and the Dow Jones nosedived 1700 points, joining the S&P and NASDAQ in having their biggest drop since 2020,” Colbert remarked. He accurately noted the significant downturn, highlighting a grim financial reality for many. “So, worst day for our economy since COVID,” he added.
Colbert’s commentary took a sharp turn as he humorously quipped, “Just a little reminder this time, he’s the disease.” This pointed remark underscores his criticism of Trump’s role in exacerbating economic vulnerabilities.
In a further attempt at humor, Colbert suggested, “I’m just spitballing here, has anyone thought about injecting our money with bleach?” This joke metaphorically alludes to some of Trump’s controversial statements during the pandemic, illustrating the absurdity of looking for quick fixes in a time of crisis.
Despite the heavy topic, Colbert found a sliver of positivity amidst the chaos. “Now, one bit of good news coming out all this, it’s all pretty solid proof that there is no deep state, because if there was, they would have stopped this,” he stated, bringing a touch of levity to an otherwise dire situation. He went on to address purported conspiracy theories, saying, “Okay, but if they do exist, I just want to say to the cabal of financial and governmental elites who pull all the strings behind the scenes, maybe put a pause on your 5G chip, JFK Jr. adrenochrome, chemtrail orgy and jump in here because we’re dying.”
