Stephen Colbert Raises Eyebrows Over Changing Christmas Traditions
During a festive monologue on his show, Stephen Colbert expressed his Christmas cheer while addressing a concerning trend he recently uncovered: many Americans are abandoning longstanding holiday traditions. In particular, he highlighted a surprising shift towards preferring burgers over the classic turkey for Christmas dinner.
“As we find ourselves just a little over a week away from Christmas, I hope your stockings are hung by the chimney with care, your eggs are nogged, and your nuts are fully Megged,” Colbert quipped on Tuesday’s episode of “The Late Show.” He then shared that a new poll indicates a growing disinterest in time-honored Christmas customs.
“What?” he exclaimed, displaying disbelief. “Christmas is traditions. You can’t simply disregard them and still celebrate the holiday. If wooden shoes aren’t set out, how will Sinter Klaus deliver dried fruits and nutmeat for a bountiful harvest? Think it through, Hans!” he added, alluding to the whimsical aspects of holiday lore.
Colbert emphasized that one of the traditions viewers are opting out of concerns the festive meal, noting that many respondents expressed a desire for burgers in place of the traditional turkey. He lightheartedly attributed this trend to a fictional sociographic analyst, Clarence T. Gobbs, as an image of a turkey in a doctor’s outfit appeared on screen.
“He’s a doctor. It’s Dr. Clarence T. Gobbleton,” Colbert quipped, furthering the humorous angle of his segment.
Yet, this shift in holiday cuisine prompted a thoughtful inquiry from the host. “If we start having burgers on Christmas, what will we consume on the Fourth of July? This could disrupt the entire festive food calendar. I simply can’t eat burritos on Arbor Day. That would just be inappropriate,” he quipped, blending humor with a pointed observation about the importance of tradition in holiday celebrations.
Colbert’s commentary didn’t end there. He also touched on various other topics, including Canada’s political landscape and the rising popularity of Guinness beer among women. For the full experience of his monologue, viewers are encouraged to check out the complete segment.
