Nick Hern Books has announced the upcoming posthumous release of “Here We Are,” the last composition of the iconic American composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim, set for publication on May 22, 2025. This date coincides with the European premiere of the musical at The National Theatre in London.
“Here We Are,” inspired by the cinematic works of Luis Buñuel, has been co-created with playwright David Ives. It serves as a surreal satire focusing on upper-class American society, portraying a gathering of friends who face a series of bizarre occurrences while attempting to enjoy a meal together. Originally performed in New York in 2023, the play will be published for the first time in conjunction with its National Theatre performance, which boasts a remarkable cast that includes Martha Plimpton, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jane Krakowski, and Rory Kinnear.
Stephen Sondheim stands out as a seminal figure in the realm of 20th-century musical theatre, having garnered numerous accolades throughout his career, such as eight Tony Awards, eight Grammy Awards, an Olivier Award, an Academy Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. He was also honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015. Sondheim passed away in November 2021 at the age of 91, making “Here We Are” his concluding masterpiece.
The published edition of “Here We Are” will not only include the complete text and lyrics but also feature an insightful essay by Ives titled “Writing with Sondheim,” which aims to provide a deeper understanding of the collaborative process involved in creating this significant work.
Pre-orders for “Here We Are” are currently available through Nick Hern Books’ website. The book will also be sold at every performance at The National Theatre and through various retailers, both in-store and online.
Matt Applewhite, Managing Director of Nick Hern Books, expressed his pride in presenting Sondheim’s final work to audiences, emphasizing the importance of celebrating the legacy of one of theatre’s greatest visionaries. He remarked, “It’s a fitting farewell from a writer who never ceased to challenge the form—both for us and the fortunate audience he left behind.”
