Earlier this month, fans of the iconic band Stereolab were pleasantly surprised to receive a mysterious 7-inch vinyl single in the mail, intriguingly labeled “Unsolicited Stereolab Material.” This special disc, which also found its way to several Pitchfork staff members, featured a new track titled “Aerial Troubles” on one side, while the opposite side contained an instrumental rendition of the same song. This release symbolizes a significant moment for Stereolab, as it marks their first new music in a decade and a half, along with the announcement of an upcoming album.
Set to drop on May 23, the album titled Instant Holograms on Metal Film will be available through Stereolab’s own label, Duophonic UHF Disks, in collaboration with Warp Records. Fans can also enjoy a visually captivating video for “Aerial Troubles,” which was artistically directed by French photographer and painter Laurent Askienazy.
Joining original members Tim Gane and Laetitia Sadier on the album are a talented array of contributors, including Cooper Crain, Rob Frye, Ben LaMar Gay, Ric Elsworth, Holger Zapf, Marie Merlet, and Molly Read. Additionally, the 7-inch record that was sent out contained engaging fill-in puzzles and word-find games featuring the names of band members as well as other clues hinting at forthcoming music. The sleeves of the single also prominently display the logos of Warp and Duophonic UHF Disks.
Stereolab’s last studio album, Not Music, was released in 2010. Since then, the band has revisited their catalog with several reissues, the latest being Pulse of the Early Brain, which received a re-release in 2022. Earlier this year, they also announced the availability of seven more affordable reissues of their albums, presented in a double-disc format rather than the previously released triple-disc editions.
As fans eagerly anticipate new music, Stereolab is also preparing for an international tour that kicks off next month, showcasing their work in various cities across North America and Europe throughout the year.
