Subhash Ghai Ventures into Short Film Territory with Gandhi Starring Manoj Bajpayee
Acclaimed filmmaker Subhash Ghai is making a significant foray into the world of short films with his latest project titled Gandhi, featuring the talented Manoj Bajpayee in the leading role. The film made its debut at the prestigious 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), representing Ghai’s innovative approach to storytelling.
Discussing his vision for the project, Ghai explains that “filmmaking is all about perspective.” He elaborates on how wars and conflicts often arise from differing viewpoints, emphasizing that his short film transcends a mere narrative—it serves as an exploration of diverse perspectives. The idea for Gandhi was inspired by an encounter with a student from Whistling Woods International, who expressed skepticism about celebrating Gandhi Jayanti. This candid remark spurred Ghai to investigate Gandhi’s relevance in contemporary society. He expressed deep appreciation for Manoj Bajpayee’s involvement, noting that the actor did not seek any payment for his participation in the project and was motivated by a desire for younger audiences to grasp the significance of Gandhi’s message.
Manoj Bajpayee reflected on his experience working on the film, acknowledging Ghai’s perspective-centric approach. He remarked, “Gandhi dada is an icon for us all, yet many in the younger generation hold misconceptions about him.” Bajpayee described his long-standing aspiration to collaborate with Ghai, considering it a dream fulfilled to finally work alongside him on Gandhi. He appreciated the opportunity to spend time with Ghai on this project, which he found both enlightening and beneficial in addressing the varying interpretations of Gandhi between generations.
With Gandhi, Subhash Ghai is stepping into uncharted territory, marking his first venture into the short film format. This project beautifully intertwines modern reflections with historical significance, offering audiences a fresh and thought-provoking interpretation of Gandhi’s values as applicable in today’s world.
