Imagine navigating through the vastness of space in a torpedo-shaped vessel, tasked with salvaging materials amidst a chaotic orbit. Suddenly, a gigantic alien version of a fangtooth fish appears, menacingly pursuing your ship. It certainly raises the stakes of the day! In such high-pressure circumstances, one might easily miscalculate and crash. However, in the game Suborbital Salvage, your supervisor isn’t in the mood for excuses.
Collide with an asteroid or a drone, and expect some heavy-handed mockery from a sarcastic feline who critiques your performance. If the fish manages to catch you, it’s deemed your fault for “feeding” it, a clear breach of company guidelines. Following every blunder, this cat delivers comical commentary that adds a unique twist to the gaming experience. The anticipation of its witty retorts becomes almost as thrilling as the game itself.
Your primary objective within Suborbital Salvage is to gather as many “C” tokens as possible while maneuvering through a minefield of dangers in space.
Initially, controlling your ship may prove challenging. You must twist the crank to steer while simultaneously pressing the B button or D-pad to engage the thrusters. Getting accustomed to the physics is essential, especially with the persistent threat of the fish looming behind you. As you progress, the environments become increasingly intricate, featuring obstacles like asteroids, mines, and bizarre giant space fungi, along with complex pipe systems. Successfully flying through rings offers speed boosts, crucial for evading your aquatic pursuer.
The game keeps you on high alert, focusing on survival at every turn, yet it remains accessible rather than overly difficult. Once I familiarized myself with the controls and ship dynamics, I found myself making significant headway. Competing against others is added incentive, with leaderboards showcasing achievements in salvage recovery, distance traveled, and overall performance—immerse yourself while also feeling the reality check from that mischievous cat. The blend of thrilling adventure and humorous insults creates an engaging package.
Some of my favorite quips from the cat include: “I don’t know if it’s occurred to you but… You really should try flying through the rings, not into them,” and “You know, most people try to steer AWAY from space rocks.” At one point, it simply advised, “Just be better.” The game does allow you to switch the dialogue setting from “Roast me” to “Shutup cat,” but that would be missing out on the delightful humor. Priced at $8, Suborbital Salvage by Games Right Meow can be found in the Playdate Catalog, promising both excitement and laughter in your gaming experience.
