Suga from BTS Issues Apology Following Electric Scooter Incident
Suga, a member of the globally renowned K-pop group BTS, has publicly apologized after facing consequences for operating an electric scooter while under the influence. The 31-year-old artist expressed his feelings of regret and disappointment towards his fans through a social media post.
In his statement, Suga revealed that he had “violated the road traffic act” while riding home in Seoul. He admitted to having underestimated the distance and neglected to remember that it is illegal to ride an electric scooter while intoxicated. “I fell while parking the electric scooter in front of my house, and there was a police officer nearby,” he explained.
After being subjected to a breathalyzer test, Suga was fined, and his driving license was revoked. South Korea’s Yonhap news agency disclosed that his blood alcohol concentration was recorded at 0.08%. In his apology, he emphasized that although he was fortunate to have caused no harm or property damage, he took full responsibility for his actions. “I apologize to those who have been hurt by my carelessness and wrongful behavior, and I will ensure that this does not happen again in the future.”
Currently, BTS is on hiatus as its members fulfill their military obligations. Suga himself began his service last year and is serving as a social service agent due to a medical exemption related to shoulder surgery he underwent in 2020. Reports indicate that his alternative service is likely tied to his health issues.
Bighit, the record label representing BTS, has also issued a statement regarding the incident. They expressed sincere regret over Suga’s actions and the distress caused to fans. “As a social service agent during his military service, he is prepared to accept any disciplinary actions from his place of work for causing a social disturbance,” the label stated. Furthermore, they pledged to enhance measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
This event sheds light on the responsibilities public figures hold, especially within the context of South Korea’s strict laws and social expectations surrounding substance use and safety. As discussions regarding celebrity behavior continue, Suga’s commitment to taking accountability may serve as an important lesson for others in the public eye.
