Suits LA, a recent addition to the television landscape, has been airing for several weeks. Although it hasn’t captured the widespread acclaim anticipated, the show is steadily establishing its presence and narrative structure.
This spinoff, led by Stephen Amell, made an impactful entrance by unveiling its characters and their intricate relationships.
The premiere episode disrupted the established dynamics from the original series, diverging into two distinct storylines.
One narrative path followed Ted Black, while the other revolved around Stuart Lane.
As the storylines progressed and the characters tackled various legal challenges, it became evident that Rick Dodsen is the standout figure of the series.
Regrettably, it appears he may never receive the spotlight he deserves.
Rick Stands Out as Suits LA’s Moral Compass
In the gritty world of legal drama, finding principled lawyers can seem as unlikely as discovering an oasis in a desert. Yet, amidst a culture often characterized by deception and moral ambiguity, Rick emerges as a beacon of integrity.
From the outset, when Stuart establishes his firm alongside Samantha Railsback and attracts clients from his former partnership, Rick is offered the position of head of entertainment, a role he ultimately accepts.
While this choice initially raises questions, his interactions with Erica reveal the depth of his motivations. Rick’s decision stems from his affection for her, as they compete for the Head of Entertainment position at Black Lane. His willingness to prioritize her success over personal ambition illustrates a rare selflessness.
Rick is acutely aware that Railsback might struggle without the influence of the Black name, yet he takes the plunge, driven by his commitment to Erica.
Throughout the first season, he consistently exhibits a combination of empathy and humanity that is often missing in his peers. Rick is willing to forgo his own well-being for the greater good and actively seeks to rectify injustices when they arise.
For example, upon discovering that John Amos had not been honored appropriately in Hollywood, Rick undertakes the effort to secure him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Unlike many lawyers who move on once a client passes away, Rick values the legacy and contributions that individuals like Amos have made.
In stark contrast to the gruff personas of characters like Ted and Stuart, Rick embodies a more compassionate approach that resonates well in a highly competitive environment.
Despite His Virtues, Rick Remains in the Shadows
Unfortunately, societal structures tend to reward the unscrupulous. This dynamic underscores why individuals who engage in deceit often ascend to power within organizations.
Ideally, Rick would be the central figure of this narrative, yet even in his esteemed role as Head of Entertainment, he remains overshadowed by the firm’s hierarchy.
His decisions are subject to higher authority, limiting his effectiveness.
Similarly, Railsback is positioned as a secondary character to Black and Associates, primarily serving to support the arcs of characters from the rival firm, which curtails their potential for development.
Compounding these challenges, the Railsback Lane firm faces significant ethical dilemmas. Stuart’s repeated transgressions in legal matters threaten to jeopardize both his reputation and that of his colleagues.
In a more equitable narrative, the future seasons of Suits LA would allow Rick to take center stage as a seasoned leader at his firm. He possesses far more charisma than both Ted and Stuart, coupled with a fundamentally better character.
